A Word from Rick: September 9, 2022

notes on the Bible
Rick Davis

I have been in Christian ministry as a pastor for over 20 years in the United Methodist Church. I cannot imagine any other place I would rather serve God than in the churches of our U.M.C. It has been and continues to be one of the great joys of my life. Even though I’ve gotten a little gray over the years I continue to look forward to many more to come. God willing.

Over this time, one issue has continued to raise concerns, questions, and false predictions about a split within our beloved church. As with all things human, there have been some with personal agendas seeking to somehow gain from the discourse. However, most of us simply want to serve and love God in Jesus Christ. Questions and concerns have been heartfelt from different positions. The dominant issue has been over human sexuality. During this time, I have learned the only proper answer to give to the question of a breakup within the UMC is “no, maybe someday in the distant future.” For over 20 years this has been the correct and accurate answer. We are now at the point where some churches are breaking off and looking to start new Wesleyan-based churches. It is a process and will take time, as we are legally as well as spiritually connected. A connection that has served congregations and people around the world by spreading the Gospel and love of God in Jesus Christ in both word and work. FUMC Bridgeport is an excellent example of God’s good work in our community and the world.

FUMC Bridgeport is on course to remain within the U.M.C. as we focus on spreading and doing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The two greatest commandments were given by our Lord, “to love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind and strength…and your neighbor as yourself” these remain the center of our strength and Christian values. As with individuals, our congregation is unique as we serve the Lord our God. The congregations of our North Texas Conference of the U.M.C. are each unique as we all reach out to our respective communities. At the same time, we work together for the greater good of God’s kingdom. The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church helps to bind us together to more effectively achieve the goal of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

I hope and pray that the leaders in the competing movements will all take the higher ground as they seek to disaffiliate with love and compassion. Some have not. Some have broken the covenant we share; others have misrepresented events or truths to promote their agenda. In order to keep us all better informed, I have attached a link to a site addressing some of the questions, misperceptions, or misinformation concerning the United Methodist Church. If you have any questions or concerns, please know I am available to you. Please do not hesitate to make an appointment. As always, be in prayer, for we are a people steeped in the love and grace of God in Christ, informed and led by the Holy Spirit.

May the Grace and Peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you!
